Spanish Intermediate Stage 1

You will have recently completed a Lower Intermediate course or have a GCSE, perhaps from some time ago. You will be learning other past tenses and other tenses commonly used on a daily basis in Italy like the subjunctive and conditional. There will be a strong emphasis on speaking and listening and more specific vocabulary will also be introduced. As the course progresses the course will concentrate more on conversation while still revising key grammar structures students may feel they have not fully mastered.

This course aims to enable students to talk about aspects of Italian culture and current affairs.

Saying what you would like to do.

Travelling

Dealing with medical emergencies.

More emphasis placed on speaking skills.

Language structures

The conditional tense. Some uses of the subjunctive. The pluperfect tense.

The course will also touch on the conditional perfect and the past historic tenses if time allows, in addition to further use of the passive forms.

Entry Requirements

You must have attended a recent Lower Intermediate class or you have practiced your Spanish regularly while on holiday. You have confidence in referring to future and past events and you feel confident with your conversational skills. Please bring paper and pen. You will be advised about any book which needs to be purchased.

At Intermediate level, your continuing exposure to the language will extend your language skills and begin to take you beyond the strictly basic demands of previous levels. Increased accuracy, a wider range of vocabulary, practice in using the past, present and future tenses and a greater understanding of idiomatic expressions combine to give more confidence in speaking.

The language you learn will enable you to:

Make arrangements
Give simple presentations
Write letters
Express preferences
Make complaints, etc.

The settings will include personal life, travel, leisure activities, the workplace etc.

2 hours per week, 15weeks

The course is structured over 25 sessions of 2 hours (term time only) with class sizes of 10-16 students.
There will be a range of teaching and learning activities including discussions, presentations and perhaps a debate. The course has an emphasis on speaking and listening but reading and writing elements are covered through exercises and texts or articles.

A minimum of 2 hours of independent learning / homework is recommended.
This may include: online activities from a particular website, reading extracts of Spanish press, preparing ideas for a debate.
