Sew Like a Pro – Intermediate (Saturday)
This is the perfect sewing course for you if already have sewing experience and have made a few of your own simple garments and would like support and guidance to progress your skills on to more challenging clothes making project!
As a group you will all follow an intermediate level appropriate tutor selected pattern, which can be able to be altered to fit personal design preferences and match custom measurements.
Over the duration of the course, you will get to experience introductory pattern altering/cutting, fabric preparation, understanding pattern layout on fabric, following the grain, garment assembly/order of construction and professional finishing techniques all of which will culminate in the making of your final garment.
Learners are expected to be already confident using a sewing machine. There will be training provided to use the overlocker during the course.
The course includes:
• A recap of understanding the core measurements, choosing a size that match custom measurements.
• Following and understanding pattern instructions.
• Size blending techniques: understanding whether you can work with the garment ease or require a further adaption through pattern cutting.
• Mini workshops on staple sewing tasks (e.g. darts, buttonholes, sleeve setting).
• Selecting appropriate fabrics for the pattern with tutor guidance when working with the fabric/s of your choice.
• Using high quality sewing & finishing processes on the final garment.
*To get the most out of the course some of the work may need to be completed in your own time.
Entry Requirements
This course is for learners that have completed the beginners’ level or who have some experience in dressmaking having made a couple of simple pieces and are looking to develop their skills. You will also be competent in using a sewing machine. All the equipment you need will be provided. After guidance from the teacher, you will be asked to purchase yourself some material, if you choose to use them there will be a contribution required towards calico and pattern paper, approx. £10.00, the exact cost will be dependent on how much you choose to purchase.

You’re very welcome to bring along your own sewing machine if you’d like, or you can choose to use one of our machines. Learn to make clothing while making friends at the same time.
This course will take place for 2.5 hours a week for 8 weeks
This course has no exam but will be assessed by outcome achieved by each learner. The teacher will want you to have learnt new skills.
This course will take place for 2 hours a week for 6 weeks.
The next course can be negotiated, some learners might like to enrol in intermediate again to make another item of clothing and further refine their skills or possibly progress onto our sew like a pro: advanced course. Progression to F/T BTEC Fashion and clothing possible following interview if you would like to study fashion in greater depth.
The course will help you to increase your skills in making clothes that look professional.
